Coming from a graduating high school class of 48 students, I was extremely nervous about attending a university with over 16,000 students however, the way in which the campus is divided into several smaller colleges allowed me to gain a feeling of being part of a smaller community, while still taking advantage of the opportunities that a large scale research university provides. "My experience at UC Santa Cruz changed my life in many ways. Not to mention, serving the community as a radio DJ and administrative member at the radio station has opened my eyes to how valuable community radio and public media is!" I have worked at UC Santa Cruz's radio station, KZSC Santa Cruz 88.1 FM for all four years of undergrad, and the skills I've gained within radio/media broadcast have been incredibly impactful on my career interests. Despite this, I have been able to find a lovely community of people in Santa Cruz and have had an enriching experience learning from instructors in the Music Department. I don't wish to discourage prospective students from applying, I just wish to shed light on this issue that the school seems to ignore. The school will need to make major improvements on providing resources for students to have their basic needs met in the coming years.

The housing market in Santa Cruz is extremely competitive and toxic for students, many of which are first-time renters. This being said, Santa Cruz is a small town, and the university does not make proper accommodations for the ever growing population of students accepted each year. This campus is truly unique, and there are many microcosms of communities within the 17,000+ students here.

"UC Santa Cruz is a beautiful oasis of redwood trees and trails within the beach town of Santa Cruz. I felt very lucky to have been able to complete my undergraduate degree at such a beautiful place." The weather in Santa Cruz is also perfect: 70 degrees, sun and ocean. I will forever cherish the memories riding my bike, redwoods on all sides. There are trees everywhere, and it truly is a little city on a hill. The campus as a whole is absolutely gorgeous. It absolutely has made me a better writer, and I feel so honored to have studied with other fantastic peers and instructors. Since it is a smaller and more competitive program to get into, there really is individual attention. The instructors are talented, passionate, and care. However, the creative writing department was excellent. You pay all of this money to not even really get to interact with most of your professors. Instructors rarely see your work unless you're in a smaller program or room, and TAs (sometimes younger than you) are grading your work and assigning you a grade at the end. Unfortunately, since there are so many students, classes are huge. There are so many other incredible writers who are more than deserving of a place on a university syllabus, and the department would benefit from reflecting what the student body looks like in the authors that they choose. A lot of the authors that are discussed are authors in the canon: dead, white men. Some classes were very informative, but the thing that is definitely missing is the diversity of authors in the curriculum.

While Santa Cruz Community College technically results from some genocidal history I don’t think we are about to change the name of our town or county to absolve ourselves of guilt … it won’t work … but Cabrillo is the name of a man to no longer be honored.Īs for the cost, this is a rounding error for what we are paying state university football coaches. Who knows where Cuesta College is? (San Luis Obispo). As a proud resident of Aptos, I live in a town unknown out of the county.
